This figure shows the basic flow of forces in a cable-stayed bridge. Horizontal components of forces are balanced as compression in the superstructure, and vertical forces are transferred to the foundation of the main piers. The self-balancing nature of the cable-stayed bridge gives structural advantage over the suspension bridge and its massive and expensive main-cable anchorage.
