Donald Smith, P.E., is the district engineer for TxDOT's Beaumont District, where he oversees the planning, designing, building, operation and maintenance of the state transportation system for the district.
The district comprises eight counties: Chambers, Hardin, Jasper, Jefferson, Liberty, Newton, Orange and Tyler.
Smith has more than 25 years of transportation engineering experience, including more than 10 years of senior leadership experience. He joined TxDOT from the Hawaii Department of Transportation, where he served the past five years.His last assignment as district engineer for the District of Hawaii was focused on addressing transportation challenges on the big island, Hawai'i.
Prior to his service in Hawaii, Smith served for 21 years with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet until his retirement in 2014. His service in Kentucky included a variety of roles, including in construction, traffic, central office construction and division of maintenance. He is a certified public manager and has successfully accomplished several leadership trainings that have prepared him for challenges in dealing with natural disasters, complex transportation projects and difficult project complications.
Smith is a 1992 graduate of the University of Kentucky with a Bachelor of Science in civil engineering. He is a registered professional engineer in Kentucky, Hawaii and Texas.
